History
Tropical Cyclone Lucas formed in the Australian region during the 2020–21 cyclone season. The system developed as a tropical low before organising and intensifying into a named tropical cyclone. Lucas reached its peak intensity as a Category 1 tropical cyclone on the Australian scale before making landfall on the northwest coast of Western Australia near Coral Bay in late January 2021. The cyclone brought strong winds, heavy rainfall, and rough seas to coastal communities in the region. Coral Bay experienced damaging gusts and significant rainfall as the system crossed the coast, though the area's sparse population limited the extent of reported damage. Lucas subsequently weakened as it moved inland over the arid Western Australian interior, with the system gradually losing tropical characteristics as it tracked away from the coast. No significant casualties were reported in connection with the cyclone. Lucas was one of several tropical cyclones to form during the 2020–21 Australian region season, which was characterised as below average in overall activity, with most systems developing in the Southern Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean portions of the basin between 90°E and 160°E.
