History

Severe Tropical Cyclone Marian was an open-ocean system that developed in April 1991 within the Australian basin. The storm originated from a mid-level atmospheric depression over the western Arafura Sea, organising into a tropical cyclone on 10 April 1991, approximately 110 kilometres south of Timor. Early intensification was hampered by the mountainous terrain of Timor, which limited low-level moisture inflow into the system. Once the core moved clear of the island and tracked west-southwest under the influence of a subtropical high-pressure system, Marian underwent rapid intensification over open water.

The cyclone reached its peak intensity between 13 and 16 April 1991, attaining Category 4 status on the Australian scale, with a central pressure of 930 hPa and maximum 10-minute sustained winds of 185 km/h. During this period, a mid-level ridge to the west caused the storm to slow considerably. As Marian stalled off the coast, the Bureau of Meteorology issued a Tropical Cyclone Watch for parts of the Kimberley and Pilbara coastlines, which remained active for roughly 24 hours before the system began shearing apart.

Marian did not make landfall. Increasing vertical wind shear rapidly disrupted its convective structure and the system decayed. Its remnant low was subsequently absorbed into the developing circulation of Cyclone Fifi, with the additional moisture and energy contributing to Fifi's intensification and the devastating impacts that followed.
