History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Marian originated in the Australian region before briefly crossing into the South-West Indian Ocean basin at the end of February 2021. The system entered the Indian Ocean basin as a mature cyclone, having already undergone its main development under Australian Bureau of Meteorology oversight. Its transit into the South-West Indian Ocean was short-lived, and it did not make landfall during this phase of its track.
Marian reached severe tropical cyclone intensity during its lifecycle, placing it among the more significant systems of the 2020–21 Southern Hemisphere cyclone season. Its brief appearance in the South-West Indian Ocean was noted within the context of an otherwise active season that included several impactful storms affecting Mozambique and Madagascar. The cyclone's passage through the eastern portion of the Indian Ocean basin was transient, and it did not generate the widespread destruction seen from contemporaneous systems such as Cyclone Eloise or Cyclone Habana during the same season.
