History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Monty was the final cyclone of the 1982–83 Australian region cyclone season, developing from a weak tropical low on 22 April 1983, approximately 300 kilometres north-northwest of the Cocos Islands. The system formed within an active monsoon trough that also gave rise to Severe Tropical Cyclone Naomi around the same period, with both cyclones spawning from the same trough line.
After initially tracking east to east-southeast for roughly two days, Monty shifted to a south-southeasterly course on 24 April, at which point it reached its peak intensity. At maximum strength, the system barely achieved Category 3 status on the Australian scale, with an estimated minimum central pressure of 975 hPa and maximum 10-minute sustained winds of 120 km/h. Following this peak, Monty turned generally southward, moving over progressively cooler ocean waters off the Western Australian coast, which caused it to weaken and fully dissipate on 29 April 1983.
Monty remained over remote open waters throughout its entire lifecycle and never made landfall. As a result, no damage, injuries, or fatalities were recorded on land. Some commercial vessels passing through the storm's outer reaches reported near gale-force winds between 25 and 28 April. The cyclone is historically distinct from the far more destructive 2004 Cyclone Monty, a Category 4 system that struck the Pilbara coast and caused significant destruction.
