History

Severe Tropical Cyclone Naomi developed on 21 April 1983 from an isolated tropical low near 10°S, close to the western edge of the Australian region basin, just south of an active monsoon trough. Notably, this same monsoon trough simultaneously produced Severe Tropical Cyclone Monty approximately 15 degrees of longitude to the east, making the two systems near-simultaneous twin developments.

Naomi's track was unusually erratic. After drifting northward and reaching tropical cyclone intensity on 22 April, the system executed a sharp recurve eastward on 23 April, then turned southeast on 24 April. The storm reached its peak intensity on 25 April, attaining Category 3 status on the Australian scale with a minimum central pressure of 960 hPa and maximum sustained 10-minute winds of 150 km/h. It then continued tracking southeastward into the open ocean before reversing course to move northwestward around 30 April as it weakened over cooler waters. Naomi dissipated entirely on 2 May 1983.

The cyclone remained over remote open-ocean waters throughout its entire lifespan and did not make landfall. No structural damage or casualties were recorded on land. Maritime shipping advisories were issued in response to the storm's strong winds and heavy swells, though no vessels reported damage. Naomi is not to be confused with a later, unrelated 1993 storm of the same name that struck Western Australia's coast.
