Nathan

History

Severe Tropical Cyclone Nathan developed in early March 2015 from a tropical low near the Queensland coast, generated by the outer rainbands of Cyclone Pam as that system made landfall in Vanuatu. The Bureau of Meteorology designated and named the system Nathan, which intensified erratically over several days, executing a looping path before tracking toward Cape York Peninsula.

Nathan reached peak intensity as a severe Category 3 cyclone, with maximum sustained winds around 185 km/h and gusts nearing 210 km/h, making landfall north of Cooktown on 20 March 2015 in a sparsely populated area. After weakening as it crossed the peninsula, Nathan benefited from warm waters over the Gulf of Carpentaria and re-intensified, subsequently making a second landfall near Nhulunbuy in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, at minimal Category 1 equivalent strength. The system then decayed into a remnant low, ultimately dissipating over the Timor Sea.

The cyclone produced heavy rainfall and flash flooding across Queensland and the Northern Territory. Notable 24-hour rainfall totals included 261 mm at Fanny Creek. Flooding in Nhulunbuy reached knee-deep, disrupting transport and communications, while Lizard Island experienced significant wind damage to infrastructure. Road closures, flight cancellations, and washed-out runways hampered emergency relief efforts. No fatalities were recorded, but total damage across northern Queensland reached approximately A$74.8 million.
