NED
1988-89 season · AU198889_08U
History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Ned was a late-season system that existed in the Australian region between 26 and 31 March 1989, tracking through the eastern Indian Ocean before turning towards the south-west coast of Western Australia. The weakening system crossed the coast near Rockingham, south of Perth, on 1 April 1989.
Ahead of landfall, emergency services throughout the Perth metropolitan area were placed on stand-by. Ned went on to produce squally winds across south-western Western Australia, bringing down power lines and causing scattered outages. Gusts in the Perth metropolitan area reached 110 km/h and were strong enough to strip roofing from some buildings, while winds above 100 km/h were also recorded at Rottnest Island and Fremantle. Gale-force conditions were thought to have occurred near the landfall point at Rockingham.
One of the more unusual consequences of the storm occurred inland at Collie, where high winds sank a starting pontoon on the Wellington Dam course during the Australian Rowing Championships. Officials abandoned the race in progress and ultimately cancelled the entire King's Cup — the first time in the event's 111-year history that it had been abandoned outside of wartime or depression.
The name Ned was subsequently withdrawn from the Australian naming list.
