History

Tropical Cyclone Neville was one of eight named storms of the 2023–24 Australian region cyclone season, a season that ran officially from 1 November 2023 to 30 April 2024 and which, despite below-average numbers, produced six severe tropical cyclones.

Neville began as a tropical low over the eastern Indian Ocean in early March 2024, developing to the north of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. The system was tracked for an unusually long period as a weak low before conditions finally allowed it to organise. It was not classified as a tropical cyclone and given the name Neville until 20 March, roughly a fortnight after it was first identified. Once named, the storm strengthened quickly, reaching Category 4 severe tropical cyclone status on the Australian intensity scale — its peak intensity. Neville remained over the open waters of the Indian Ocean throughout its life and did not approach or cross the Australian coastline. Shortly after intensifying, the cyclone moved west out of the Australian region of responsibility, departing the basin around 20–21 March, some three weeks after the parent low was first noted.

Because Neville tracked far offshore, it posed no threat to populated areas of Western Australia or to the Cocos Islands, and it was not associated with coastal impacts, damage or loss of life. Its significance lies chiefly in its late and rapid intensification after an
