Odette
2020-21 season · AU202021_23U
History
Tropical Cyclone Odette formed during the 2020–21 Australian region cyclone season, a below-average season in terms of total systems but one marked by several significant storms. The season officially ran from 1 November 2020 to 30 April 2021, during which eight tropical cyclones developed in the region between 90°E and 160°E, with three reaching severe tropical cyclone status.
Odette developed within this broader seasonal context, monitored by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology's tropical cyclone warning centres alongside the JTWC and other national meteorological agencies. The 2020–21 season was influenced by a La Niña pattern, which had been declared on 29 September 2020, bringing warmer than average sea surface temperatures to waters north of Australia and generally enhancing tropical cyclone potential across several sub-regions.
The season is most notably remembered for Cyclone Seroja, which caused catastrophic flooding and landslides across southern Indonesia and East Timor, making it the third-deadliest cyclone on record in the Australian region. Odette was one of the eight named systems that formed during this active but spatially varied season, operating under the standard monitoring framework shared among Australian, Papua New Guinean, and Indonesian meteorological authorities.
