History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Oma formed during the 2018–19 South Pacific cyclone season, which was a below-average season that produced five tropical cyclones, two of which reached severe tropical cyclone status. Oma was one of those two severe tropical cyclones, making it among the more significant systems of the season.
The season operated under the oversight of the Fiji Meteorological Service, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, and New Zealand's MetService, with additional monitoring from the United States Joint Typhoon Warning Center. Wind speed assessments from the regional agencies were based on ten-minute averages using the Australian Tropical Cyclone Intensity Scale, while the JTWC used one-minute sustained wind estimates for comparison against the Saffir–Simpson scale.
The 2018–19 season fell short of pre-season forecasts, which had anticipated between seven and eleven named systems and at least three severe tropical cyclones. Other notable systems during the season included Tropical Cyclone Mona, which caused flooding, road closures, and displaced around 2,000 people in Fiji, and Tropical Depression 06F, which brought gale-force winds to Tonga, damaging crops and disrupting schools and transport. Oma reached severe tropical cyclone intensity, placing it among the stronger systems of what was otherwise a quieter-than-expected season across the South Pacific basin.
