Category 3

History

Severe Tropical Cyclone Orson developed from a tropical low northwest of Darwin, Northern Territory on 17 April 1989, initially tracking southwest before turning westward and being named. The system intensified steadily, reaching Category 3 on 19 April and Category 5 on 20 April. It achieved peak intensity around 21–22 April with 10-minute sustained winds of 250 km/h and a central pressure of 904 hPa recorded at the North Rankin gas platform — at the time the lowest pressure ever measured in the Australian region. Orson made landfall near Dampier in the early hours of 23 April with winds of around 220 km/h, subsequently passing over Pannawonica before weakening rapidly and dissipating over the Great Australian Bight on 24 April.

Despite its exceptional intensity, Orson struck a sparsely populated stretch of the Western Australian coast, limiting the overall toll. Five people died, including four Indonesian fishermen whose vessels sank in swells reaching 20 metres, and one person whose yacht lost contact during the storm. Twenty people were injured, around 60 left homeless, and approximately 1,000 affected. The worst structural damage occurred in Pannawonica, where 70 homes were damaged. Offshore, a drill rig at a major oil platform was dislodged, delaying development by nearly two weeks. Total damages reached A$20 million, with cleanup costs adding a further A$5 million. The name Orson was subsequently retired.
