OSCAR
1983-84 season · AU198384_01U
History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Oscar developed as a shallow depression north of Suva, Fiji, around 23 February 1983, during the highly active 1982–83 South Pacific cyclone season — a period heavily influenced by a strong El Niño event. The system moved westward and steadily intensified, reaching its peak as a Category 3 severe tropical cyclone on the Australian scale by 27 February. It then tracked south-east back toward Fiji, where it made its greatest impact.
Oscar struck Fiji with considerable force, becoming one of the most destructive tropical cyclones to affect the island nation on record. The storm claimed nine lives and caused an estimated US$130 million in damage. Its impact was severe enough to disrupt communications across Fiji, temporarily forcing New Zealand's meteorological service to assume regional forecasting responsibilities that would normally be handled by the Fiji Meteorological Service. The cyclone dissipated around 6 March 1983.
In recognition of the destruction and loss of life it caused, the name Oscar was subsequently retired from the list of tropical cyclone names used in the South Pacific region.
