History

Severe Tropical Cyclone Pam was an intense but short-lived system that affected the Coral Sea and the waters off southern Queensland in early February 1974. The storm developed from a tropical low embedded in an active monsoon trough over the central Coral Sea on 3 February, several hundred kilometres east-northeast of Townsville, and organised quickly over exceptionally warm water. It was named by the Brisbane Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre that same day and deepened rapidly, reaching severe tropical cyclone status within about 24 hours.

Pam entered the Australian region on 4 February on a south-westerly heading before turning and tracking south-southeastward, roughly parallel to the Queensland coast but remaining some 300–400 km offshore of the Capricornia and Wide Bay districts. Peak intensity occurred on 4–5 February; some analyses rate the system as high as Category 5 with 10-minute sustained winds near 205 km/h, while other assessments place it at Category 3 with a central pressure around 960 hPa, sustained winds of 130–140 km/h and gusts exceeding 180 km/h over open water. At its closest approach, the cyclone passed roughly 500 km east of Brisbane.

Moving southeast of Fraser Island (K'gari), Pam encountered cooler seas and stronger wind shear, weakening and recurving to the southeast. It lost tropical characteristics around 5–6 February and passed back into the South Pacific basin as an extratropical low, with the system last noted on 7 February.

Because the cyclone never crossed the Australian coast, there were no direct deaths or significant structural damage on land. However, its large circulation drove gale-force onshore winds and enormous swells of up to 8–10 metres, causing severe beach erosion from the Capricorn Coast south to the Gold Coast and forcing shipping and fishing fleets to shelter in port. Outer rainbands added further runoff to catchments already saturated during the historic 1973–74 season.
