History
Tropical Cyclone Pierre was a late-season system that developed in the Australian region on 17 May 2007. Its formation came after the close of the official 2006–07 Australian cyclone season, which had run from 1 November 2006 to 30 April 2007, making Pierre an out-of-season event. It is nonetheless counted within the 2006–07 tropical cyclone year, a separate period defined by the regional tropical cyclone operational plan as extending from 1 July 2006 to 30 June 2007.
Pierre occurred during a season that was, overall, below average in activity for the Australian region. Cyclones forming in these waters fall under the responsibility of four tropical cyclone warning centres: the Australian Bureau of Meteorology offices at Perth, Darwin and Brisbane, together with the warning centre operated at Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea. The naming of Pierre followed the sequential list used by the Australian warning centres during that year, which had earlier produced names including Nelson, Odette, George and Jacob.
