QUENTON
1983-84 season · AU198384_03U
History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Quenton developed in late November 1983 from a tropical low pressure system south of Java, forming on 26 November and organising into a named cyclone overnight on 27–28 November as it tracked southeast toward the Western Australian coast. The storm underwent rapid intensification over warm ocean waters, reaching peak intensity as a Category 4 system on the Australian scale, with a minimum central pressure of 955 hPa and maximum 10-minute sustained winds of 165 km/h, broadly equivalent to a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale.
Quenton made landfall late on 29 November 1983 along Eighty Mile Beach, a remote stretch of the Pilbara coast in Western Australia, before weakening quickly over the interior and dissipating on 30 November. Its crossing was historically notable as the first November cyclone to strike the Australian mainland in a decade, following Cyclone Ines in 1973, and the first coastal landfall of the 1983–84 season.
The storm's impact was limited by the extreme remoteness of its landfall location. The Sandfire Roadhouse, situated near the edge of the most intense part of the system, sustained minor property damage. Pastoral stations in the coastal region reported localised stock losses and fencing damage from severe wind gusts. Quenton marked an unusually early start to what would prove an active Western Australian cyclone season.
