History

Severe Tropical Cyclone Sina developed in early March 1980 from a broad trough of low pressure stretching between Vanuatu and Queensland, Australia. A tropical depression formed on 9 March near Rennell Island in the Solomon Islands, initially tracking south-eastward into the Australian region before turning south-westward. The Bureau of Meteorology declared it a tropical cyclone and assigned the name Sina on 11 March. The system then moved back into the South Pacific basin, continuing to intensify as it tracked south-eastward. On 13 March, Sina reached its peak intensity as a Category 3 severe tropical cyclone, with 10-minute sustained winds of around 120 km/h, passing approximately 200 kilometres south-west of New Caledonia. The cyclone did not make a direct coastal landfall during its peak phase, but after reaching maximum intensity it accelerated south-eastward, gradually weakening and transitioning to a cold-core low. The remnants of Sina affected northern New Zealand on 15 March before the system was last recorded the following day.
