TRACY
1974-75 season · AU197475_05U
History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Tracy developed from a tropical disturbance detected over the Arafura Sea on 20 December 1974, approximately 370 kilometres northeast of Darwin. Initially forecast to miss the city, the storm changed course early on 24 December, rounding Bathurst Island and heading directly toward Darwin. Its centre crossed the coast near Fannie Bay at around 3:30 a.m. on Christmas Day, 25 December.
Tracy was an exceptionally compact system, with gale-force winds extending only 40–50 kilometres from its centre, making it one of the smallest tropical cyclones ever recorded. Despite its small size, it reached severe tropical cyclone intensity, with the highest recorded gust of 217 km/h measured at Darwin Airport before instruments failed. The Bureau of Meteorology estimated actual peak gusts reached approximately 240 km/h. The lowest recorded pressure was 950 hectopascals.
The storm caused catastrophic damage to Darwin, destroying or severely damaging more than 70 percent of buildings and rendering the vast majority of housing uninhabitable. Over 25,000 residents were left homeless, and more than 30,000 people were subsequently evacuated from the city. Sixty-six people died in total, 45 on land and 21 at sea. Damage was estimated at A$837 million. In the aftermath, Darwin was rebuilt to significantly more stringent cyclone-resistant construction standards. Tracy remains the most destructive tropical cyclone in Australian history.
