History

Severe Tropical Cyclone Trevor developed from a tropical low that formed over the Solomon Sea near Papua New Guinea on 11 March 2019. It became the fourth severe tropical cyclone of the 2018–19 Australian region season, eventually reaching a powerful intensity before tracking southward toward Australia. The system made landfall on the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland, and its broad circulation also brought significant impacts to the Northern Territory.

In Papua New Guinea, Trevor caused widespread destruction on Goodenough Island, where nearly 1,000 homes were either partially or fully damaged, a primary school was forced to close, food gardens were harmed, and a church was destroyed. Wet conditions associated with the storm delayed the opening day of an international cricket qualifier tournament in Port Moresby.

In the Northern Territory, authorities declared a state of emergency on 21 March, and approximately 1,400 residents were evacuated to shelters — the largest such evacuation in the region since Cyclone Tracy in 1974. Several major roads were closed as a precaution. On Cape York, the town of Coen lost power entirely when the cyclone crossed the coast, and Iron Range National Park sustained extensive tree damage. Due to the significant impacts Trevor caused across northern Queensland, the name was subsequently retired and will be replaced by Trung when the storm name list next repeats.
