History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Unnamed 03U, historically referred to as the "Great Gold Coast Cyclone", originated near Fiji in the South Pacific around 11 February 1954. Tracking southwest through the Coral Sea, the system intensified into a Category 3 severe tropical cyclone before making landfall directly over Coolangatta on the Gold Coast at approximately 10:00 PM on 20 February 1954. At landfall, central pressure was recorded between 962 and 973 hPa, and the storm's damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and storm surge were felt from the Sunshine Coast south to Sydney.
Rainfall was extraordinary, with Springbrook in the Gold Coast hinterland recording around 900 mm in the 24 hours prior to landfall, among the highest single-day totals in Australian history. This triggered severe flash flooding across northern New South Wales, including a sudden surge of floodwater through Kyogle that caught residents without warning. A storm surge of 0.64 metres was recorded in Moreton Bay, while waves at Kirra reached approximately 3 metres above road level, sweeping vehicles off coastal highways. Macintosh Island was submerged by the combined surge and overflow from the Nerang River, requiring emergency evacuations. The entire commercial fishing fleet at Byron Bay was destroyed. Structural damage extended to Brisbane, Lismore, and communities as far north as Noosa. At least 34 people died, the majority as a result of flash flooding in northern New South Wales. Because Australia did not begin naming tropical cyclones until 1964, this system is identified by its tracking designation, 03U.
