History

Tropical Cyclone Unnamed 01U was a rare off-season system that developed during the 2022–23 Australian region cyclone season, forming from a tropical low south of Sumatra on 27 July 2022. The system tracked west-southwestward across the northern Indian Ocean, drawing some benefit from locally warm sea surface temperatures and favourable low-level wind patterns. During 29–30 July, as it passed south of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, post-season analysis confirmed that the circulation had briefly reached Category 1 intensity on the Australian scale, with sustained winds of around 75 km/h and gusts near 95 km/h, and a minimum central pressure of approximately 998 hPa. Because this Category 1 status was only identified through post-season reanalysis rather than operational monitoring at the time, the system was never assigned an official name.

As 01U continued southward into cooler waters during late July and into August, increasing vertical wind shear and dry mid-level air rapidly eroded its convective structure. The system weakened to a remnant low and dissipated on 1 August 2022. The cyclone did not make landfall at any point. Cocos (Keeling) Islands experienced squally winds, elevated swells, and some rainfall as the system passed to the south, but no structural damage was recorded. There were no casualties associated with the cyclone.
