History

Tropical Cyclone Vernon developed on 23 February 2022 when the Bureau of Meteorology upgraded Tropical Low 22U to tropical cyclone status. The system had quickly built deep convection and a well-defined inner core before being named. After formation, Vernon underwent rapid intensification and reached a peak of Category 4 on the Australian scale, making it one of the more powerful systems of the 2021–22 Australian region cyclone season. Rather than making landfall on the Australian coast, Vernon tracked out to sea and crossed into the South-West Indian Ocean basin. Its intensification was influenced by an interaction with Tropical Low 25U. No significant damage or casualties on the Australian mainland were associated with Vernon, as the storm remained offshore throughout its time in the Australian region.
