Veronica

History

Severe Tropical Cyclone Veronica originated as a tropical low near East Timor on 18 March 2019, tracking southwest through the Timor Sea before being classified as a tropical cyclone on 19 March. The system intensified rapidly, reaching Category 4 status within roughly 24 hours of becoming a severe tropical cyclone. Veronica peaked at Category 4 intensity with ten-minute sustained winds of 195 km/h and a central pressure of 938 hPa. After peaking, it weakened gradually as it approached the Pilbara coast of Western Australia, where it stalled near the shoreline for approximately 24 hours at Category 3 strength before tracking westward parallel to the coast. The system dropped below tropical cyclone intensity on 26 March and made landfall at North West Cape later that day, eventually dissipating over the eastern Indian Ocean on 31 March.

Veronica's primary impacts were economic rather than human — no fatalities were recorded. Major disruption to iron ore export operations drove total economic losses to around $1.7 billion. Port Hedland, Australia's most significant iron ore export hub, was closed for nearly four days. Rio Tinto estimated production reductions of approximately 14 million tonnes, sustained damage to the Cape Lambert port, and reported losses of $1.6 billion in stockpiled ore. Fortescue had roughly 2 million tonnes of exports disrupted. Port Hedland also experienced significant flooding and structural damage to homes, with local damage estimated at around A$45 million. Due to the severity of its impacts, the name Veronica was retired and will be replaced by Verity.
