History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Viola developed from a disturbance that formed on 7 December 1979, approximately 600 kilometres northwest of Cocos Island. A tropical depression organised by 9 December and the system was named Viola two days later as it tracked slowly southwestward. It subsequently turned westward under the influence of an easterly mid-level flow situated north of the subtropical ridge.
Viola reached its peak intensity on 16 December 1979, producing maximum mean winds of around 205 km/h and an estimated central pressure of 930 hPa, making it a severe tropical cyclone. The system did not make landfall on the Australian coast. In the early hours of 18 December, Viola crossed 80°E longitude and moved out of the Australian region's area of responsibility, at which point it was renamed Cyclone Claudette by the relevant Indian Ocean meteorological authority. No damage or casualty information specific to Viola has been recorded in connection with its time in the Australian region.
