History

Tropical Cyclone Warren began as a tropical low that developed over the Gulf of Carpentaria on 4 March 1995. The system tracked southwards and strengthened quickly, attaining Category 1 tropical cyclone status later that same day, at which point it was named Warren.

Warren subsequently swung onto a south-westerly heading and underwent a period of rapid intensification, passing just to the north of Mornington Island on 5 March. Around six hours later the cyclone reached its peak, with mean winds estimated at 140 km/h and a minimum central pressure of 960 hPa, placing it in the severe tropical cyclone range.

The cyclone then moved onto the southern shore of the Gulf of Carpentaria, making landfall near peak strength. Once over land Warren decayed quickly, losing organisation as it tracked inland, and the remnant system dissipated in the vicinity of the Queensland–Northern Territory border on 6 March.

Warren was one of two cyclones named by the Brisbane warning centre in quick succession in early March 1995, forming at almost the same time as Severe Tropical Cyclone Violet in the Coral Sea, during a season that was otherwise below average for activity in the Australian region. The name Warren was later withdrawn from the naming lists and replaced by Wallace.
