History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Willy developed from a weak low-pressure system that formed south of Java along the monsoon trough on 2 February 1984, during the highly active 1983–84 Australian region cyclone season. The system drifted and gradually organised over several days before being upgraded to tropical cyclone status by the Bureau of Meteorology late on 5 February. Willy then tracked southwestward from 6 February and continued to intensify, reaching severe tropical cyclone classification on 7 February with an estimated central pressure of 975 hPa. The storm reached its peak intensity on 8 February, with a central pressure of 960 hPa, and satellite imagery showed a well-organised system with an intermittently visible eye. Strong wind shear caused rapid weakening, and Willy fell below tropical cyclone intensity late on 9 February, ultimately dissipating early on 11 February. The cyclone did not make landfall during its relatively brief existence and no casualties or significant damage were recorded in connection with the system.
