WILLY
2004-05 season · AU200405_08U
History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Willy developed from a tropical low on 8 March 2005, approximately 830 kilometres north of Port Hedland, Western Australia. The system initially remained nearly stationary as it organised, before being named Tropical Cyclone Willy in the same general area. It then tracked slowly west-southwest, running roughly parallel to the Australian coastline and steadily intensifying in favourable atmospheric conditions.
Willy reached its peak intensity on 11 March, producing 10-minute sustained winds of 140 km/h when positioned around 550 kilometres northwest of Onslow. After peaking, the cyclone turned to the southwest and held its strength for approximately a day before beginning to weaken. It subsequently turned westward and deteriorated into a remnant low on 14 March, continuing to drift west away from the Australian coast before dissipating several days later.
Willy did not make landfall at any point during its existence. Its primary impact was the disruption of oil production operations in the Timor Sea. No damage or casualties were recorded on land as a result of the system.
