History
Tropical Cyclone Yvette developed on 19 December 2016 from a tropical low that formed within a monsoon trough approximately 660 kilometres north-northwest of Karratha in Western Australia, designated as system 07U by the Bureau of Meteorology. The United States Joint Typhoon Warning Center also classified it as Tropical Storm 02S shortly after formation. By 21 December, persistent deep convection allowed the system to strengthen to a Category 1 tropical cyclone on the Australian scale, at which point the BOM officially named it Yvette.
The cyclone's development was hampered by strong wind shear, which caused convection to weaken while the system moved quasi-stationary before beginning to track southeastward. Dry air wrapping into the centre further weakened the storm, and by 23 December the BOM had downgraded Yvette to a tropical low. Both the BOM and the JTWC issued their final advisories on the system that same day. Yvette did not make landfall as a cyclone, and its remnants were subsequently absorbed by Tropical Low 06U on 25 December as that system moved slowly over northwestern Australia. Yvette was the first named tropical cyclone of the 2016–17 Australian region cyclone season, which was otherwise noted as slightly below average in overall activity.
