Durga
2007-08 season · AU200708_23U
History
Tropical Cyclone Durga developed in April 2008 in the eastern Indian Ocean, within the area of responsibility of the Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre in Jakarta. It formed at a time when the Jakarta centre had only recently begun operating in an official warning role, and Durga, together with Tropical Cyclone Rosie, became one of the first tropical depressions the Indonesian centre monitored. Durga went on to intensify to tropical cyclone strength, and in doing so became the first system ever to be named by TCWC Jakarta, a notable milestone for tropical cyclone warning arrangements in the Australian region.
Durga remained over waters to the north-west of Australia, within the tropical latitudes of the Indian Ocean monitored jointly by the Jakarta and Perth warning centres, and no significant impacts on Australian territory were recorded.
Durga was the final tropical cyclone of the 2007–08 Australian region season, which concluded at the end of April and finished slightly below average in terms of overall activity.
