History
Tropical Cyclone Rosie was a system of the 2007–08 Australian region cyclone season, a season assessed overall as slightly below average in activity. Rosie developed in April 2008, near the end of the season, and was monitored as a tropical depression within the area of responsibility administered by the Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre in Jakarta. Together with Tropical Cyclone Durga, which followed it, Rosie held the distinction of being among the first tropical depressions ever tracked by the Jakarta warning centre, which had only recently taken on formal responsibility for cyclone monitoring in that portion of the Australian region. Durga went on to become the first system to reach tropical cyclone strength and receive a name while under Jakarta's watch, and was also the final storm of the season, which concluded officially on 30 April 2008.
The season in which Rosie occurred was notable for several unusual events, including an early July system recognised only in post-season analysis, Severe Tropical Cyclone Guba's deadly flooding in Papua New Guinea, and Cyclone Helen's passage near Darwin, the first cyclone to affect the city since 1984–85. Within this context, Rosie's significance lies chiefly in its role in the operational history of tropical cyclone monitoring in the eastern Indian Ocean region north of Australia.
