History
Severe Tropical Cyclone Olga developed within a monsoon trough south of the island of Sumba on 4 April 2024, during the 2023–24 Australian region cyclone season. The system intensified rapidly, reaching Category 5 strength within approximately three days of formation, making it one of only two Category 5 cyclones of that season alongside Cyclone Jasper. Olga was the seventh named storm of the season and formed in the eastern Indian Ocean region of the Australian basin. The season as a whole was notable for producing six severe tropical cyclones despite having a below-average total number of named systems, with only eight storms receiving names across the entire season. Olga's rapid deepening to Category 5 intensity stood out as a significant meteorological event within the season. The collective damage from all systems during the 2023–24 season totalled approximately USD $790 million, with the single fatality recorded for the season attributed to Cyclone Jasper rather than Olga.
