History

Severe Tropical Cyclone Riley formed during the 2018–19 Australian region cyclone season, which was considered an average season overall, producing eleven tropical cyclones of which six reached severe tropical cyclone status. The season ran officially from 1 November 2018 to 30 April 2019, with activity monitored primarily by the Bureau of Meteorology, along with the Indonesian meteorological agency BMKG and the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in an unofficial capacity.

Riley reached severe tropical cyclone intensity, placing it among the stronger systems of that season. The 2018–19 season was notable for being the first since 2014–15 to feature at least six severe tropical cyclones, with the three most intense storms — Veronica, Trevor, and Savannah — all developing in March 2019 and collectively affecting all three of BOM's Australian sub-regions. Riley was one of eight systems named by the Bureau of Meteorology during the season.
